Within this project, thousands of articles and other texts published in the portuguese architectural periodical press of the 20th century were collected and analyzed in a systematic survey. This fruitful work, conducted in close association with the national College of Architects, is about the relationship between architecture itself and its critical perception, as expressed in specialized published reviews, that become both a source of knowledge and a powerful instrument to shape taste and influence the course of architecture itself. It produced a database, as a result of the thorough analysis of 27 magazines, 3 books, 29 papers, 20 international communications, 10 sessions of debates in 2 cycles (Cover/Themes and Agents). As a highlight of this multidisciplinary work, an international conference took place, under the same name of the project, held in Lisbon in September 2015. This study will become an important milestone and unavoidable reference for the study of portuguese modern architectural culture. A PhD. thesis was initially presented as an expected indicator but it was not realised. No mention or justification of this unfulfillment was provided in the final report.

O projecto contribuiu para a formação de jovens investigadores e para a projecção internacional da equipa envolvida.
This project of international scope, coordinated by Joana Cunha Leal, involving the researchers Alexandra Cardoso, Alexandra Trevisan, Antoni Remesar, Maria Helena Maia, Mariana Pinto dos Santos and Silvia Vieira de Almeida, and the scholarship students Begoña Farre and Joana Couto, set out to explore and review the dominant definition of Modernism, in the light of its stylistic components and self-referentiality, formal autonomy and representation abandonment, using artistic ‘cases’ of the 20 and 30’th years of the last century in the field of Catalan architecture, and also the Greek, Italian and Portuguese architecture, based on the thesis that “modernism of southern Europe” potentiated indeed a rooting in the vernacular culture in the light of the so-called “critical regionalism”. The scientific results of the project in terms of the conferences, publications with ‘referee’ in dedicated journals, and scientific conference proceedings, among others, show high quality and correspond, in general, the targets set in the project. Noteworthy is, in short, in the light of the results data to the press and congress that took place under his aegis, the cross-disciplinary nature of this research, which joined the History of Art and Architecture in Documentary Photography, the heuristic search of written sources published or handwritten, and Art Criticism and other historiography, a sense of cross-cutting approaches, to better understand and characterize the artistic creation and the visual culture of the times in question and the geographical areas studied. Thus contributed through scientific publications and international conferences that produced, and that the report lists the duly problematize the concept and practice of Modernism from their understanding and their experiences in Southern Europe.

This is a very interesting and innovative project with the collaboration of various academic institutions and museums. The team of experts from diferent areas of knowledge developed an interdisciplinary work in which historical and artistic study of the pieces (including documentary and bibliographic research) was combined with laboratory analysis (mineralogical composition, chemical characterization and dating by Luminiscence method).
The objectives were achieved overall and some were even exceeded, as communications in national and international meetings. The expected indicators that have not been performed (such as publishing a number of papers in national and international journals or submission of a doctoral thesis) can still be achieved as the results from the work developed will proceed in the future.
Meanwhile this project has had important international visibility through the participation of team members in scientific meetings and international projects, and above all by the publication of results of the project in English language (which exponentially increases the covered public). All this is prestigious for the team (especially the possibility of collaboration of the principal investigator in an exibition in the National Gallery in Washington) but also useful for disseminating the results achieved, and at the same time make known the research developed in Portugal. It should be emphasized the fact that the laboratory data obtained become a reference internationally and thus contribute to further studies in other countries.
