O Instituto de Estudos Medievais (IEM) e o Instituto de História da Arte da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, juntamente com o Centro de Investigação e Estudos em Belas Artes da Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa (CIEBA FBAUL) e em colaboração com o Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga organizam o Congresso Internacional Almas de Pedra. Escultura Tumular: da Criação à Musealização, que decorrerá de 2 a 4 de Novembro de 2017, no MNAA, em Lisboa.

Entendendo a escultura tumular como fonte privilegiada para o perscrutar da Idade Média e reconhecendo-lhe a sua complexidade de fenómeno simultaneamente artístico, estético, espiritual, histórico, antropológico, sociológico e cultural, pretende-se promover um debate verdadeiramente multidisciplinar em torno destas peças e dos processos que lhe deram origem. De igual modo, este congresso visa ampliar a abordagem destas esculturas, olhando-as também numa perspectiva patrimonial e museológica, através de uma atenção à materialidade das mesmas (a original e a que lhes foi frequentemente sobreposta), aos processos de restauro de que foram ou estão a ser objecto, às movimentações a que foram sujeitas e aos projectos de musealização que integraram ou poderão integrar.

The Instituto de Estudos Medievais (IEM) and the Instituto de História da Arte da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, along with theCentro de Investigação e Estudos em Belas Artes da Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa (CIEBA), and in collaboration with theMuseu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon, are organizing the International Congress “Souls of Stone. Funerary Sculpture: from the Creation to the Musealization”, which will be held in November 2-4, 2017, at the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, in Lisbon.

Submissions for Call for papers and call for projects ended on March 31st

Funerary sculpture is definitely a precious source for the understanding of the Middle Ages but also, due its complex nature as an artistic, aesthetic, spiritual, historical, anthropological, sociological and cultural artefact, it implies a true and authentic interdisciplinarity, which is one of this congress’ main focus. Moreover, this scientific meeting wishes to contribute to broaden the approach to these sculptures by encouraging their analysis also from a patrimonial and museological perspective. This means to give attention to the materiality of the tombs (both the original and the one they have been given throughout their existence), to the restoration processes they were or are being submitted to, to their transfers and changes of context, as well as to the museum projects they integrate.
