Biography
Amanda Tavares is a postdoctoral researcher at IHA funded by the Leverhulme Trust. She obtained her PhD in 2023 at the University of Sheffield, and her doctoral research formed the basis of her forthcoming monograph ‘Visualising the Mediterranean: Unlearning and Imagining through Contemporary Art’.
Amanda is particularly interested in how contemporary art can renegotiate and dismantle historical visual tropes, as well as in the role of installations and multimedia artworks in creating spaces for political reflection and community engagement. Her current project at IHA looks at Zineb Sedira’s more recent and immersive installations in order to examine strategies of representation, knowledge production and circulation through artistic practice.

Amanda Tavares é investigadora de pós-doutoramento no IHA com bolsa da Leverhulme Trust. Ela obteve o seu doutoramento em 2023 na Universidade de Sheffield, e este projeto de investigação deu origem à sua monografia ‘Visualising the Mediterranean: Unlearning and Imagining through Contemporary Art’.
Amanda tem interesse em como a arte contemporânea pode renegociar e desmantelar construções visuais históricas, bem como no papel das instalações e obras de arte multimídia na criação de espaços para reflexão política e engajamento comunitário. O seu projeto atual no IHA analisa as instalações mais recentes e imersivas da artista contemporânea Zineb Sedira, a fim de examinar estratégias de representação, produção e circulação de conhecimento através da prática artística.
