HISTÓRIA

 

O IHA foi fundado em 1997 e é uma unidade de I&D da NOVA FCSH. É membro ativo da RIHA—Associação Internacional de Institutos de Investigação em História da Arte desde 2012, e membro fundador do IN2PAST—Laboratório Associado para a Investigação e Inovação em Património, Artes, Sustentabilidade e Território, em funcionamento desde 2020. Nas duas últimas avaliações da FCT, o IHA obteve a classificação mais elevada em todos os parâmetros, tendo sido distinguido como «Excelente».

O IHA consolidou uma comunidade colegial e coesa de investigadores, empenhados no diálogo entre pares e na excelência da investigação individual e coletiva. Esta comunidade trabalha para integrar a investigação realizada em Portugal nos circuitos internacionais de história da arte, através de contextos de publicação variados e da participação em redes, promovendo a transferência de conhecimento num ambiente científico e formativo orientado para a colaboração.

A estrutura flexível e democrática do IHA é reforçada pela diversidade do seu quadro de gestão e dos perfis, experiências e afiliações dos seus membros. Entre os investigadores integrados, encontram-se docentes da NOVA FCSH e de outras universidades e institutos politécnicos, investigadores a tempo inteiro, com diferentes categorias e vínculos contratuais, bem como profissionais de museus, da cultura e do património. A rede de colaboradores inclui ainda um amplo número de estudantes de doutoramento, a maioria com bolsas de estudo. O IHA contribui para quatro programas de doutoramento da NOVA FCSH, estruturando e aproximando áreas de investigação e ensino em história da arte.

Até 2023, três linhas centrais de investigação estruturaram as atividades dos grupos de investigação do IHA:  a) Transferências Culturais numa Perspetiva Global, b) A Exposição: Teoria e Práticas, c) Estudos de Lisboa. Estas linhas serviram de base para várias realizações colaborativas refletidas nas iniciativas  dos GIs e dos Clusters, e em projetos de I&D financiados tanto por via de instituições públicas nacionais e internacionais (União Europeia, FCT, Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, EGEAC), como de parcerias com entidades e fundações privadas (como as Fundações Calouste Gulbenkian, Millennium bcp e Carmona e Costa).

Paralelamente, o IHA tem vindo a desenvolver investigação fundamental sobre modernismos, fotografia, história das exposições, museus e mercados de arte, arte contemporânea feminista, artes e a expansão marítima, arte japonesa, história de Lisboa, monumentos e estudos do património. Os seed-projects financiados pelo IHA têm igualmente articulado investigação básica e aplicada, abrindo novos caminhos em domínios como a história da arte inclusiva e cidadã, os direitos humanos, as humanidades digitais (campo que também os clusters têm aprofundado) ou a renovação da preocupação de longa data do IHA com a memória e os arquivos dos artistas. Este último aspecto foi reforçado pelas responsabilidades assumidas pelo IHA relativamente ao arquivo CEDANSA – Centro de Estudos e Documentação Almada Negreiros-Sarah Affonso, criado em 2022.

O IHA publica a Revista de História da Arte, revista de acesso aberto e com revisão por pares, recentemente reestruturada para aumentar a sua projeção internacional e preparar a sua indexação. Entre 2011 e 2023, publicou também a série W da mesma revista. O Instituto acolhe ainda a equipa de editores locais do RIHA Journal e é a chancela editorial de vários livros electrónicos publicados em acesso aberto.

Os investigadores do IHA têm mantido relações duradouras com diversas redes internacionais. Além da participação ativa na RIHA – International Association of Research Institutes in the History of Art, colaboram com redes como a European Association for Japanese Studies, a European Network for Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies, TIAMSA – The International Art Market Studies Association, o ICOM, a EUROPEANA, a Latin American Studies Association, o International Panorama Council, a Time Machine Europe, ou a European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science (E-RIHS), entre outras. Estas redes articulam-se com parcerias internacionais estabelecidas no âmbito de projetos de I&D, tais como PALAMUSTO, H2020 MSCA ITN, (2019-2023); Barroco-Açu, financiado pela FAPESP brasileira (2022-2027) e acolhido pela Universidade de São Paulo; e o projeto T-Factor da UE Horizon 2020 (2020-2023). Três projetos financiados pela FCT, acolhidos ou co-acolhidos pelo IHA — The Primitivist Imaginary in Iberian Modernisms, ROADMAP e CURIOSITAS — também contaram com equipas de investigação internacionais.

Além destas redes e projetos, a internacionalização do IHA traduz-se também no acolhimento de investigadores visitantes internacionais, pós-doutorados e doutorandos. Entre 2021 e 2025, o IHA recebeu dois académicos seniores provenientes do Goldsmiths College e da Universidade de Tohoku, bem como 25 investigadores visitantes (doutorados e estudantes de doutoramento) do Reino Unido, Alemanha, Espanha, Brasil e Estados Unidos, dos quais 14 tiveram a sua estadia financiada pela instituição de origem. Com bolsas de pós-doutoramento atribuídas pelo IHA, foram integrados também investigadores da Bélgica, África do Sul, Itália, Espanha, Brasil e Estados Unidos. O projeto PALAMUSTO concedeu dois contratos de doutoramento a estudantes internacionais. Dezassete estudantes de doutoramento do IHA tiveram/têm co-orientadores internacionais (na Europa, no Brasil, nos EUA e no Japão).

O IHA foi igualmente parceiro do 11.º Festival d’histoire de l’art, organizado em França pelo INHA, que teve Portugal como país convidado (2022). Dois membros do IHA participaram no comité científico e mais de 10 investigadores do Instituto participaram no programa. No âmbito desse Festival, o IHA co-organizou o RIE-recontres internationales étudiants, tendo os bolseiros envolvidos (6 portugueses e 6 franceses) sido convidados a partilhar as suas reflexões teóricas e metodológicas em Lisboa e em Fontainebleau.

Mais recentemente, a integração do IHA no consórcio de 7 unidades I&D que formam o Laboratório Associado IN2PAST abriu novas perspectivas para o estudo, preservação e promoção do património cultural, reforçando a dimensão colaborativa da investigação do Instituto.

Os investigadores do IHA contribuem significativamente para a visibilidade internacional da história da arte produzida em Portugal, através de diversos circuitos de publicação e colaboração científica. Volumes editados e artigos em inglês, revistos por pares, surgem regularmente em séries de livros e revistas científicas de referência. Os investigadores também são autores, editores ou co-editores de volumes publicados por editoras académicas de prestígio (Wiley-Blackwell, Cambridge University Press, Springer, Routledge/Taylor & Francis, Palgrave Macmillan, Brill/De Gruyter, Leuven University Press, etc.)  contribuindo para a circulação e disseminação da investigação desenvolvida em áreas-chave do IHA.

HISTORY

 

The IHA was founded in 1997 and is an R&D unit of NOVA FCSH. It has been an active member of RIHA—International Association of Art History Research Institutes since 2012, and a founding member of IN2PAST—Associated Laboratory for Research and Innovation in Heritage, Arts, Sustainability and Territory, in operation since 2020. In the last two evaluations conducted by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), IHA received the highest rating in all parameters and was distinguished as ‘Excellent’.

The IHA has consolidated a collegial and cohesive community of researchers, committed to peer dialogue and excellence in individual and collective research. This community works to integrate research produced in Portugal into international art history circuits, through diverse publication contexts and participation in research networks, promoting knowledge transfer in a scientific and educational environment oriented towards collaboration.

The flexible and democratic structure of the IHA is reinforced by the diversity of its management body and by the varied profiles, experiences, and institutional affiliations of its members. Among its integrated researchers are faculty members from NOVA FCSH and other universities and polytechnic institutes, full-time researchers at different career stages and with different contractual arrangements, as well as professionals from museums and the cultural and heritage sectors. The network of collaborators also includes a large number of doctoral students, most of whom hold scholarships. The IHA contributes to four doctoral programmes at NOVA FCSH, structuring and bringing together areas of research and teaching in art history.

Until 2023, three central research lines structured the activities of the IHA’s research groups: a) Cultural Transfers in a Global Perspective, b) The Exhibition: Theory and Practices, c) Lisbon Studies. These lines served as the basis for several collaborative achievements reflected in the initiatives of the Research Groups and Clusters, and in R&D projects funded both by national and international public institutions (European Union, FCT, Lisbon City Council, EGEAC) and by partnerships with private entities and foundations (such as the Calouste Gulbenkian, Millennium bcp  and Carmona e Costa Foundations).

At the same time, the IHA has been conducting fundamental research on modernisms, photography, the history of exhibitions, museums and art markets, contemporary feminist art, the arts and maritime expansion, Japanese art, the history of Lisbon, monuments and heritage studies. Seed projects funded by IHA have also articulated basic and applied research, breaking new ground in areas such as inclusive and citizen art history, human rights, digital humanities (also explored by the clusters) and the renewal of IHA’s long-standing concern with artists’ memory and archives. This latter aspect was reinforced by the responsibilities assumed by IHA regarding the CEDANSA archive – Centro de Estudos e Documentação Almada Negreiros-Sarah Affonso (Almada Negreiros-Sarah Affonso Study and Documentation Centre), created in 2022.

IHA publishes the Revista de História da Arte (Art History Journal), an open-access, peer-reviewed journal, recently restructured to increase its international visibility and prepare its indexing. Between 2011 and 2023, it also published the journal’s W series. The Institute also hosts the local editorial team of the RIHA Journal and publishes several open access e-books.

IHA researchers have maintained long-standing relationships with various international networks. In addition to active participation in RIHA – International Association of Research Institutes in the History of Art, they collaborate with networks such as the European Association for Japanese Studies, the European Network for Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies, TIAMSA – The International Art Market Studies Association, ICOM, EUROPEANA, the Latin American Studies Association, the International Panorama Council, Time Machine Europe, and the European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science (E-RIHS), among others. These networks are connected with international partnerships established within R&D projects, such as PALAMUSTO, H2020 MSCA ITN, (2019-2023); Barroco-Açu, funded by Brazil’s FAPESP (2022-2027) and hosted by the University of São Paulo; and the EU Horizon 2020 T-Factor project (2020-2023). Three projects funded by FCT, hosted or co-hosted by IHA — The Primitivist Imaginary in Iberian Modernisms, ROADMAP and CURIOSITAS — also involved international research teams.

Beyond these networks and projects, IHA’s internationalisation is also reflected in the hosting of international visiting researchers, postdoctoral fellows and doctoral students. Between 2021 and 2025, the IHA welcomed two senior academics from Goldsmiths College and Tohoku University, as well as 25 visiting researchers (PhD students and postdoctoral researchers) from the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Brazil and the United States, 14 of whom had their stay funded by their home institution. Through postdoctoral fellowships awarded by the IHA, researchers from Belgium, South Africa, Italy, Spain, Brazil and the United States were also integrated in IHA. The PALAMUSTO project awarded two doctoral contracts to international students. Seventeen doctoral students at the IHA had/have international co-supervisors (in Europe, Brazil, the USA and Japan).

The IHA was also a partner in the 11th Festival d’histoire de l’art, organised in France by the INHA, which featured Portugal as the guest country (2022). Two IHA members served on the scientific committee, and more than ten researchers from the Institute participated in the programme. As part of this Festival, IHA co-organised the RIE-recontres internationales étudiants, in which the fellows involved (6 Portuguese and 6 French) were invited to share their theoretical and methodological reflections in Lisbon and Fontainebleau.

More recently, the integration of IHA into the consortium of seven R&D units forming the IN2PAST Associated Laboratory has opened new perspectives for the study, preservation, and promotion of cultural heritage, strengthening the collaborative dimension of the Institute’s research.

IHA researchers contribute significantly to the international visibility of the art history produced in Portugal through diverse publication circuits and scientific collaboration.  Edited volumes and peer-reviewed articles in English are regularly published in leading book series and academic journals. Researchers also act as authors, editors, or co-editors of volumes published by prestigious academic publishers (such as Wiley-Blackwell, Springer, Routledge/Taylor & Francis, Cambridge University Press, Leuven University Press, Palgrave Macmillan, and Brill/De Gruyter), contributing to the circulation and dissemination of the research developed in key areas of IHA.
