Biography
Carolina Proença holds a BA in Art History by Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (2018), where she also completed her Master’s Degree in 2021, presenting a dissertation regarding the iconography of the Green Man in portuguese medieval art (twelfth to fifteenth century). Currently, she is a PhD student at the same institution, where she is developing a thesis dedicated to representations of time and images of temporality in portuguese medieval art. This project was granted a scholarship by FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia). This PhD candidate wishes to direct her investigation to unconventional themes of medieval iconography, especially in media like architectural and tomb sculpture in Portugal. One of the main goals of her research is to mesh the iconographical and artistic study with an understanding of the mentality and the sociology of art, in an attempt to approach the themes of medievality in a multidisciplinary sense. Another important intention is to dive in to the habitual polysemic meaning of medieval art in an effort to understand their symbolic structures and explore how these images were received by their audiences.

Carolina Proença é licenciada em História da Arte pela Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (2018), onde também prosseguiu para Mestrado, apresentando uma dissertação sobre a iconografia do Homem Verde/Green Man na arte medieval portuguesa (séculos XII-XV), concluída em 2021. Actualmente é aluna do Doutoramento na mesma faculdade, onde desenvolve uma tese dedicada às representações do tempo e as imagens da temporalidade na arte medieval portuguesa. Este projecto é financiado pela FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia). A doutoranda pretende direccionar a sua investigação para matérias relacionadas com temáticas pouco convencionais da iconografia medieval, especialmente em suportes como a escultura arquitectónica e a tumulária portuguesas. Um dos principais objectivos da sua investigação é entrosar o estudo iconográfico e artístico com o entendimento das mentalidades e sociologia da arte, numa tentativa de abordar de um modo multidisciplinar os temas da medievalidade. Outra importante intenção é debruçar-se sobre o habitual sentido polissémico da arte medieval, no sentido de perceber as suas estruturas simbólicas e ainda explorar como estas imagens eram recebidas pelas audiências medievais.
