Biography

Duarte’s research examines the relationships between film, memory and history, with a particular focus on the role of archival images and oral discourse in non-fiction cinema and essay film. He addresses the limits and possibilities of film – photography and cinema – in conveying traumatic historical events and in constructing non-normative multi-directional memories. In an interdisciplinary approach, Duarte explores issues related to aesthetics and the politics of memory; the interplay of images and words as forms of testimony; constructivist history in early twentieth-century and contemporary art and film; and the relationships between visual writing, autobiographic memory and the place of autofiction in historiography and autoethnographic construction.
