Biography
Helena Barranha is an Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, and a Researcher at the Institute of Art History, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, where she is a member of the Museum Studies Group and coordinates the Cluster on Art, Museums and Digital Cultures.
She has a Master’s Degree in the Management of Cultural Heritage (UAlg, 2001) and a PhD in Architecture, with the thesis Architecture of Contemporary Art Museums in Portugal. From Urban Intervention to the Design of Exhibition Space (FAUP, 2008). She served as Director of the National Museum of Contemporary Art – Museu do Chiado in Lisbon (2009-2012) and as President of the Board of the Access Culture Association (2022-2023). She was also Principal Investigator of the unplace project – a museum without a place (2014-2015) and Co-coordinator of the international collaborative project Post-Internet Cities (2017).
Her current research focuses on cultural heritage, museum architecture and digital cultures and she has published widely on these topics, both in Portugal and abroad. In 2021, she co-edited the book Art, Museums and Digital Cultures – Rethinking Change.

Helena Barranha é Professora Auxiliar no Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, e Investigadora no Instituto de História da Arte, Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, onde integra o Grupo de Museum Studies e coordena o cluster de Arte, Museus e Culturas Digitais.
Tem Mestrado em Gestão do Património Cultural (UAlg, 2001) e Doutoramento em Arquitectura, com a tese Arquitectura de Museus de Arte Contemporânea em Portugal: da intervenção urbana ao desenho do espaço expositivo (FAUP, 2008). Foi Directora do Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea – Museu do Chiado, em Lisboa (2009-2012) e Presidente da Direcção da Associação Acesso Cultura (2022-2023). Foi também Investigadora Responsável do projecto unplace: um museu sem lugar (2014-2015) e Co-coordenadora do projecto colaborativo internacional Post-Internet Cities (2017).
As suas actividades de investigação centram-se actualmente no património cultural, na arquitectura de museus e nas culturas digitais, temas sobre os quais tem realizado várias conferências e publicações, tanto em Portugal como noutros países. Em 2021, co-editou o livro Art, Museums and Digital Cultures – Rethinking Change.
