Biography
Joana Baião is an art historian, curator, and researcher. Her main research interest covers the history and theory of museums and exhibitions, contemporary art, artists’ legacies, and issues around the concepts of the periphery and the global south.
She graduated in Fine Arts – Sculpture (2005), and she completed a Master’s degree in Museology (2009). She completed her Ph.D. thesis in Art History – specialization in Artistic Heritage and Museology (2014). Her post-doctoral investigation, «Study trips and artistic immigration: Portuguese artists in Paris, 1929-1976)», was based at the IHA, FCSH-UNL, and the Institut d’Histoire Moderne et Contemporaine (École Normale Supérieure, Paris), supported by an FCT post-doctoral grant.
Between 2019 and 2025, she was a researcher at the Laboratory Arts in the Mountain – Graça Morais, Instituto Politécnico de Bragança. She was a lecturer at NOVA FCSH (Art History Department) from 2018 to 2023. She is currently a member of the Arpad Szenes-Vieira da Silva Foundation Administration Board.
Joana Baião has been cooperating with several institutions in research and curatorial projects related to the Portuguese history of art and culture (National Museum of Contemporary Art, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Arpad Szenes-Vieira da Silva Foundation, Serralves Museum, among others). She is the author of two books published in Portugal (2010, 2015), essays in exhibition catalogues, and articles published in Portugal, Spain, France, and Brazil.
