Biography

Josseline Black-Barnett is a Lisbon-based curator, researcher, and writer. She is a PhD candidate in Artistic Studies – Art and Mediations at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa – Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH), affiliated with the Institute of Art History (IHA), where her research examines contemporary curatorial practices, temporal media, and the relationships between voice, writing, and artistic production. Her work operates at the intersection of curatorial practice, critical writing, and cultural programming, developed in dialogue with international institutions and artistic initiatives across Europe, Africa, Latin America, and the United States. She regularly contributes critical texts to art publications, develops international editorial partnerships for Umbigo magazine, and is the co-founder, with Maíra Botelho, of Verge! Journal for Feminist Thought through Embodied Language. She is also an Honorary Member of Women’s Activism NYC. She was curator of the international artist residency Atelierhaus Salzamt (Linz) and is the director and co-founder of NOVO Festival, a transdisciplinary platform in Lisbon bringing together visual art, performance, critical thought, and sound. A former dancer and long-term embodiment practitioner, she also develops the music project Prima, conceived as an artistic research platform where voice, performance, and embodied knowledge intersect with her curatorial and theoretical work.  Her work approaches language as both a site of emancipation and a structure of constraint, exploring how voice, writing, and performance negotiate the tensions between expression, power, and subjectivity.

Josseline Black-Barnett é curadora, investigadora e escritora sediada em Lisboa. É doutoranda em Estudos Artísticos – Arte e Mediações na NOVA FCSH e integra o Grupo de Estudos de Arte Contemporânea no IHA – Instituto de História da Arte, onde investiga práticas curatoriais contemporâneas, media temporais e as relações entre voz, escrita e produção artística. A sua prática situa-se, assim, na intersecção entre curadoria, escrita crítica e programação cultural, desenvolvendo-se em diálogo com instituições e iniciativas artísticas internacionais na Europa, em África, na América Latina e nos Estados Unidos. Contribui regularmente com textos críticos para publicações de arte, e desenvolve parcerias editoriais internacionais para a revista Umbigo tendo ainda co-criado, com Maíra Botelho, o Verge! Journal for Femimist Thought through Embodied Language. É membro honorário da organização Women’s Activism NYC. Foi curadora da residência artística internacional Atelierhaus Salzamt (Linz) e é diretora e co-fundadora do NOVO Festival, uma plataforma transdisciplinar sediada em Lisboa que reúne artes visuais, performance, pensamento crítico e som.

Ex-bailarina e praticante de longa data de práticas de embodiment, desenvolve também o projeto musical Prima, concebido como uma plataforma de investigação artística onde voz, performance e conhecimento incorporado se cruzam com o seu trabalho curatorial e teórico. O seu trabalho aborda a linguagem simultaneamente como um espaço de emancipação e uma estrutura de constrangimento, explorando de que modo a voz, a escrita e a performance negociam as tensões entre expressão, poder e subjetividade.
