Biography
Maria M. Gomes holds a degree in Art History from the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon (FLUL) and is currently a PhD candidate in Contemporary Art History at NOVA University Lisbon (FCSH/NOVA). Her master’s dissertation, “Série das invasões francesas”: análise da imagética. Uma visão Ibérica sobre um inimigo exterior, analysed Iberian visual representations of the French invasions.
Her doctoral research focuses on amateur and salon photography in Portugal during the 1950s and 1960s, with particular emphasis on the photographic activities developed within CUF. Her work examines the evolution of these practices and their implications for the artistic, social, and cultural contexts of the mid-twentieth century.
Maria has published in various specialised journals and collective volumes. Her contributions encompass studies on sculpture, printed photography, and photography. She has also presented her research at national and international conferences dedicated to photography, industrial heritage, and contemporary art history. Her academic trajectory reflects a sustained commitment to the study of photography as both an artistic medium and a socio-cultural phenomenon.
