Biography
Simão Palmeirim holds a PhD in Art Sciences (completed in 2016, with an FCT scholarship). He is a researcher, professor, and independent curator. He explores the relationships between theory and artistic practice within the context of geometric abstractionism in Portugal, with a particular focus on the work of Almada Negreiros. Since 2025, he holds a permanent research position (FCT-Tenure) at NOVA FCSH, where he also teaches, having previously lectured at Coimbra University. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of ‘Almada Negreiros Sarah Affonso Center for Studies and Documentation’ (CEDANSA – NOVA FCSH). He has co-coordinated several editions of books, academic journals, and exhibition catalogues. He has curated exhibitions at the National Library of Portugal, the National Museum of Ancient Art, and the Batalha Monastery (UNESCO World Heritage), among others. He has published internationally in the International Journal of Conservation Sciences, RIHA Journal, Color Research & Application Journal, and The Mathematical Intelligencer, among others. He has received several scholarships (Institute of Education – University of London, IELT – NOVA FCSH, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation) and has received an award in the field of Research from the Portuguese Association of Museology (2021). He is responsible for an accredited teacher training program via the National Arts Plan. Palmeirim works in the area of Humanities with emphasis on Arts. Research fields: art history, Portuguese modernism, geometric abstraction, art and mathematics, geometrical praxis, and painting in Renaissance humanism.
