Biography
Stefanie Gil Franco was born in São Paulo and has a background in social sciences and art history. In 2019, she completed her PhD at NOVA FCSH, with the thesis The Imperatives of Art: Encounters with Madness in 20th Century Portugal. Her thesis was published as a book in 2021 by the Museum Studies Collection (Ed. Caleidoscópio-DGPC).
Her areas of interest focus on themes related to difficult heritages, marginal archives, the nosographic practices of psychiatry, as well as the promotion of madness as a discursive element in the field of arts. Her interest in “art and madness” began in 2006 when she conducted research on Arthur Bispo do Rosário, which resulted in her master’s thesis in Social Anthropology at the University of São Paulo.
Her areas of interest focus on themes related to the heritage of madness, marginal archives, the nosographic practices of psychiatry, as well as the promotion of madness as a discursive element in the field of arts. Her interest in “art and madness” began in 2006 when she conducted research on Arthur Bispo do Rosário, which resulted in her master’s project in Social Anthropology at the University of São Paulo.
She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Catholic University of Portugal and an integrated researcher at the Centre for Communication and Culture Studies at the same university.

Stefanie Gil Franco nasceu em São Paulo e tem formação em Ciências Sociais e História da Arte. Em 2019, concluiu o doutoramento na NOVA FCSH, com a tese “Os Imperativos da Arte: Encontros com a Loucura no Portugal do Século XX”. A sua tese foi publicada como livro em 2021 pela Coleção Estudos de Museus (Ed. Caleidoscópio-DGPC)
Seus interesses centram-se em temas relacionados aos patrimónios difíceis, arquivos marginais, as práticas nosográficas da psiquiatria, bem como à promoção da loucura como um elemento discursivo no campo das artes. Seu interesse pela temática da “arte e loucura” começou em 2006, quando realizou uma pesquisa sobre Arthur Bispo do Rosário, que resultou na sua tese de mestrado em Antropologia Social na Universidade de São Paulo.
Atualmente, é bolseira de pós-doutoramento na Universidade Católica de Portugal e investigadora integrada no Centro de Estudos em Comunicação e Cultura dessa mesma universidade.
