Her research interests lie in the history of Empire, particularly in South Asia, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. Her publications include Convicts in the Indian Ocean (2000), Legible Bodies (2004), The Indian Uprising of 1857-8 (2007) Subaltern Lives (2014) and (with M. Mazumdar and V. Pandya) New Histories of the Andaman Islands (2016). She is current editor of the Journal of Colonialism & Colonial History.
