Biography
Trained as an art historian with a Ph.D. in Museology and Cultural Heritage (University of Coimbra, Portugal), Duarte is a curator at the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea-Museu do Chiado (MNAC-MC) and a researcher at the Institute of Art History (IHA) at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (Portugal). She was deputy director of the IHA (between 2023-2025) and has coordinated the Postgraduate Program “Art Market and Collecting” (between 2016-2024). She is a board member of TIAMSA-The International Art Market Studies Association (since 2024) and coordinates the subcommittee Art Market and Collecting: Portugal, Spain, and Brazil (since 2017).
Her main research interests cover topics such as art market, collecting practices, art collectors, art fairs and biennials, and issues around the concepts of the periphery and the global south. She has published several papers in social sciences journals. Her coedited book The Art Market and the Global South (Brill, Studies in the History of Collecting & Art Markets) was released in 2023. As an author specialized in the history of the Portuguese art market, she contributed to the Bloomsbury Art Markets-Protagonist, Networks, Provenances. She is also the coordinator of the book Dialogues of Collectors (Lisboa, Veritas, 2022, only in PT).
